  • Shafeeq

    Shafeeq at home

For Shafeeq, Soneva Fushi is home from home. There are three generations and five members of his family involved with the island. His grandfather, Kaafa, weaves baskets for the gift shop, while his father Rocket and brother Ashraf provide locally caught fish for the resort chefs. Shafeeq's cousin, Mauroof, is a waiter at Soneva Gili. The whole family is from the nearby island of Maahlos, and they carry with them a wealth of local knowledge and experience which they are more than happy to share with guests and hosts alike.

  • Thomas, Alexandra, Leo and Kieara

    our dive team

Thomas and Alexandra met as business partners at the Soneva Fushi Dive School, then fell in love and married. Their children, Kieara and Leo, have grown up on Soneva Fushi, and speak five languages. They attended the local school while their parents taught countless guests to dive. Soneva Fushi is their home.

  • Histo & Viktor

    Histo the politician

Viktor Pinchuk (right), son in law of former Ukrainian president, Leonid Kuchma, was introduced to Histo as his Mr Friday on his first visit to Soneva Fushi. Histo so impressed Viktor that Viktor gave Histo his card and told him he was capable of achieving great things. Inspired by his words Histo dedicated himself to helping his community and is now an MP. On Viktor's return to Soneva Fushi, it was Histo's turn to give Viktor his card.

  • Gurkhas

    Gurkhas

While our guests enjoy the solitude of island life, their safety is entrusted to a group of special men. Quiet and deliberately unnoticed island security is carried out by a team of Gurkhas, who are so skilled that you don't even notice they are there. If you do see one, it will be the friendly smile that gives them away.

  • Abdul

    Abdulla - Longest Serving Host

Abdulla is the longest serving host at Soneva Fushi, with 24 years at the resort he is an expert in its history. He has watched Soneva Fushi grow and develop, becoming the group's leading resort. He treasures his role at Soneva Fushi, and all the interesting people he has been lucky enough to meet. He has no intention of leaving any time soon.

  • Dr. Parag

    Dr. Parag teaches Shameem

For Soneva Fushi host Shameem the stars have long been of interest, and the chance to learn from Dr Parag Diwan was a life changing experience. Dr Parag is an internationally recognized astronomer, and he has trained some of the island hosts to explore the stars using the island observatory. Ibbe now shares his knowledge with guests, who together enjoy the crystal clear night skies over Soneva Fushi.

  • Nature Trail

    Nature Trail

For local schoolchildren, a trip to Soneva Fushi to explore the coral reefs with the island Marine Biologist can be daunting task. Many of these children cannot swim, and the few that can will most probably have never seen the amazing world that exists beneath the surface. This will be the first opportunity they have to learn about the reefs and the diverse life they support, and a chance for the next generation to be made aware of how precious and fragile these places are.

Slow Life

Soneva has always been an innovator in the field of responsible tourism. We take our environmental and social responsibilities very seriously. Whether it's developing resorts using sustainable materials, recycling waste materials, conserving water or preserving fragile underwater eco systems, we are always prepared to take the initiative.

The acronym SLOW LIFE (Sustainable-Local-Organic-Wellness Learning-Inspiring-Fun-Experiences) explains the Soneva philosophy. Our aim is to create unforgettable, enlightening experiences that rejuvenate each guest's love of SLOW LIFE. It's about illuminating lives whilst treading lightly on the earth.

At Soneva Fushi we're lucky enough to have our very own marine biologist who will be more than happy to take you snorkelling around the house reef and explain the effects of global warming.

Eco Centro is a must visit for any guest. Situated in the centre of the island, it's the hub and proving ground for Soneva responsible business initiatives. Please ask for a guided tour. Children love it, and for all of us it's a fascinating example of how innovation and determination can have very real effects in terms of improving carbon footprint.

Our SLOW LIFE philosophy applies to everything we do. We have SLOW LIFE spa experiences using local ingredients, locally produced food and drink – visits to our organic garden and mushroom hut are essential – and SLOW LIFE experiences include cultural visits to learn about the lives of Maldivian people. A visit to the school we sponsor on our neighbouring island of Eydhafushi is also highly recommended.
