It is incredible how after 6 years in the Maldives there are still a lot of fish that I have never seen!
Last week we were coming back from a house-reef snorkel and still swimming in 40 cm of water, when I spotted a weird looking fish I had never seen before. Two things I was sure about, it was very shy and hiding and could swim pretty fast.
A mix between a porcupine fish for his bumps on the skin and triggerfish for its typical shape, well I had not seen any such fish in my Maldivian fish book, but, as we know, sometimes we may miss cryptic species or juvenile forms.
I am obsessed about a lot of marine things, juveniles being one of them, Titan Triggerfish being the other. Well, combine the two and the magic is done! Juvenile Balistoides viridescens, I had seen young ones, thinking they were juvenile, but they had a normal pattern, so I thought they didn’t have a juvenile colormorph, but they do and it took us a couple of days to figure it out.
Well, let me introduce you to our new friend, or maybe not a friend -as you may remember from our previous post “War of Titans”! New exciting discoveries for us!
