Imagine this, you need to do a survey of the coral reef on the other side of the island. So you pick a day and time. You double and triple check the weather and tides. You borrow a tricycle to move all your equipment. You load up the tanks, fins, wetsuits, quadrats, tape measures, slates etc. You sharpen your pencil and your spare pencil (best to be prepared). You cycle across the island avoiding lizards, water hens and a few confused looking gardeners. You help each other to struggle into your equipment at the beach, trying not to get sand everywhere (sandy wetsuits are not fun). You defog your masks, and grab the camera. You get your buddy to walk into the sea so you can get a nice photo for the blog. They don’t want to but they go anyway because you’re a team!
Then you realise something is wrong….something is missing……..something essential for the dive…..you’re feeling a bit light….you’ve forgotten your weight belt!
OH NO! You’ve got one unhappy buddy floating in the sea waiting for you as you cycle back across the island in full dive kit!
You always need a buddy check when diving! It can stop you making silly mistakes like this and keep you and your buddy safe while diving. Now I always double check my equipment! Fieldwork fail!
