Piper, the sandpiper. It became famous with a short film from Pixar that recently won an Oscar as best animated short-film.
I am not a bird expert, but I fall in love with them very easily. The same way that I have a lot of favourite fish, I also have a lot of favourite birds. Findana is one of them.
Findana is the Maldivian name of the common sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) which has bothered me for a long time as I had no idea it was a sandpiper. Apparently it’s quite a common bird, but it never caught my attention before. We started seeing it outside our diving centre, walking around and every now and then stopping to pick from the sand. Waders feed on small crustaceans, insects and invertebrates which they pick from the sand by sight.
The feature that caught my attention and allowed me to identify it, it’s its typical wiggling of the tail which makes it so special and funny to look at. It’s not a daily encounter, but when around I could look at it for a long time, trying to see if he manages to pick any animal from the sand.
I hope you’ll have the chance to meet him too!
