During the 2013 SLOW LIFE Symposium a group of bright people came up with an idea. Simple on paper, yet brilliant and colossal in reality.
How do we change the way fisheries practice? How do we avoid the oceans continuing to be depleted of their precious resources?
In November 2016, The Soneva Dialogue took place at Soneva Fushi. The event, which took three years to orchestrate, was the result of hard work by the Stockholm Resilience Centre, Johnathon Porrit (founder and director of Forum for the Future), and Maria Padget & Bruce Bromley from The Soneva Foundation. This is the first of a series of Keystone Dialogues aimed at bringing together key actors from a specific sector to positively influence how the sector functions.
The Soneva Dialogue connected companies from Europe, America and Asia working both with wild fisheries and aquaculture, linking business to science. The main goal of this event was to initiate a transformation towards sustainable seafood production while understanding that the health of the ocean is the key. This aligns with Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Goals – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.
The keystone actors of the first dialogue made a statement: they expressed their concern about the status of the ocean, current and future. The statement outlines 10 actions that the seafood companies will take in order to ensure the protection of the ocean. These range from traceability to labour rights, from reduction of plastic to reduction of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, from sharing of best practices to reduction of use of antibiotics in aquaculture.
This is undoubtedly a key step towards the protection of our marine environment with hope that this message resonates into many other sectors. In the same way a keystone species influences the structure and function of the system in which they live.
Once again we are proud to be part of a company that strives for the protection of our precious Planet Earth and Planet Ocean.
