Stay for Good at Soneva Fushi
This week we had a very different week, with new assistants!
Stay for Good is a package unlike others, as we are unlike others at Soneva!
This promotion allows guests to come to the resort as eco-enthusiasts and work alongside our incredible teams for 5 days while getting the next 5 days on us!
During the past week we had an incredibly enthusiastic couple, flying all the way from the US just to meet us again and help us! Their energy was infectious, going beyond what we asked them to do…
K. and J. spent their first and hottest day in the vegetable garden with our horticulturalist Herath plowing and weeding our soil-beds to then allow our gardeners to plant some of our yummy salads, herbs and vegetables.
The second day, they had the chance to spend some time with Kirsty, our visiting scientist from Imperial College London, and go through the jungle putting traps and collecting soil to identify insects. Kirsty is in fact working with other 3 scientists to assess our insects-biodiversity (more to come on this topic soon…).
The third day we spent time in the water together. We are trying to assess turtles and shark population around our reef and had been looking for decent pictures of our sunrise-side resident turtle who had shown us only one side of its face so far… And here she is!
We then went to local island of Maalhos where we have established an NGO to create an alternative to plastic bottled water. The project is still work in process and we had to weed the compound… Intensive but rewarding time.
When I wanted to give up with sore legs, K and J were still full of energy!
On the last day they had the chance to spend a little more time with Kirsty in the jungle and they were much more confident at that point.
For us it has been a truly nice week, with 2 more people to come along with us and see what we do behind the scenes…, and it seems like they also enjoyed!
“This program gave us a wonderful opportunity to work alongside the dedicated Soneva staff and visiting scientists who work behind the scenes to find ways to improve the environmental outcomes of both Soneva’s own operations and those of the neighbouring communities. Their enthusiasm was contagious!” (K. and J.)
