When you think of us living in the Maldives, going out snorkeling, living the ‘Island life’, I bet you don’t think about our bicycles. We do! We think about them all the time. They are an essential part of our equipment! How would we dash to the Den for Ocean Bingo or race to Eco Centro for recycling??
Our bicycles help us take all our equipment for snorkelling AND reduce our impact on the environment. A bit of pedal power goes a long way on an island. But what happens when we need more than just our masks and fins with us? What if we need to take two sets of diving equipment across the island. Well then Houston, we have a problem.
That’s when we have to start thinking outside the bike! We tried a wheelbarrow (too unstable in the sand). We tried walking (too tiring and uncomfortable). We tried asking other people to do the heavy lifting for us (you can imagine how that went). We tried balancing the baskets on our handlebars (we drove into bushes and fell over). Then we hit a winner, we took our problem to the dive school. The brilliant team wheeled out a delivery trailer and thankfully it was still pedal powered! So we loaded up and off we went, slightly unsteadily but before we knew it we were at the beach ready to go.
So if there is something you’re finding a bit difficult, or something that is not working, try thinking outside the bike and see if there is another way to get things done. There might just be someone brilliant around the corner with a different idea.
