World Environment Day: Connecting With Nature
World Environment Day is a day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for saving the environment. This is a day in which everyone of us can do something positive for the environment. The aim is to individually take action to create a collective power and leave a legacy for a substantial and lasting positive impact on the planet.
This day is celebrated across the globe in a variety of inspiring, exciting, and effective ways. Everything from beach clean-ups to tree plantings, photo contests to political petitions, movie screenings to school activities.
Here at Soneva Fushi we are excited to celebrate World Environment Day with a few activities. We will start the morning by connecting ourselves to the sand beneath our feet and creating beautiful sand sculptures. Making sculptures of manta rays, turtles laying eggs, octopuses and anything your heart desires. In the late afternoon guests are invited to take a nature walk with our visiting scientist, Kirsty Yule. On the walk down the forested paths Kirsty will explain the connection between the smallest insects to the largest coconut trees, and how everything from the human to the gecko are all connected. The evening will close out with a short presentation about how Soneva connects with the environment and a screening of the renowned documentary Home, by Yann-Arthus Bertrand.
Soneva Fushi has gone to great lengths to help offset our carbon footprint. Soneva collects an environmental levy of 2% from the room revenues, which has raised over $6.2 million to date. We distribute energy efficient cook-stoves to Myanmar and Darfur in order to decrease deforestation, CO2 emissions and to increase overall health for the women and children. The Soneva Foundation also planted 511,920 trees covering 300 acres in the Chiang Mai region of Northern Thailand. We source as much local food as possible in addition to using food from our very own vegetable gardens and mushroom huts. We produce all of our own drinking water either through desalination or rainwater collection in order to reduce plastic waste. In 2008 we stopped buying plastic bottles which has prevented millions of bottles from littering our world. Each year we are becoming more energy efficient by switching to renewable energy sources such as solar power. Soneva’s carbon balance is +/- 0, and we strive to continue on this path.
So, What will you do tomorrow to make your impact on this earth?
Create an event for family and friends!!
It can be as easy as getting your co-workers involved in a trash free week:
- Don’t use one time use coffee cups or water bottles, buy the reusable ones that last!
- Recycle! If there is no recycling system in place for paper, plastic, metal and glass, Implement one!
- Try to get everyone to go one week without using plastic bags. Put a BAN ON BAGS in your workplace and homes. Just carry a backpack or tote bag with you.
Once you stop the bad habits and implement the good habits, it will become second nature. Today is the day to start.
